Profile

Rosie was born in Yorkshire and brought up in the Midlands. After a first degree from Warwick University and a D. Phil. from the University of York, she taught literature at the University of East Anglia then went on to work in London, Bristol and Bath.

She’s tutored creative writing for Nottingham Trent, the Open College of the Arts, the Victoria & Albert Museum as well as venues abroad including Skyros Writers’ Lab, P.E.N. Vienna, Bethesda Writers' Centre in Washington D.C. and many colleges, art galleries and community centres.

Her stories and poems are widely published in magazines, books and journals. Her poem `Persephone'  won 3rd prize in the 2010 Ambit 200 competition and her short story `What the Water Gave Me’ won the Writers Inc. competition in 2006.

In 2009 she was comissioned by Frome printers Butler, Tanner & Dennis to write a short story for the relaunch of their company: you can read the result, `Hot off the Press' on this site in Writings. Another short story, `Echo’, retelling the Narcissus and Echo myth, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and is also available to read here.

With extensive experience and training in counselling and art therapy, Rosie has a passionate belief in the power of the creative arts to heal and transform. Together with visual artist Marc Yeats, in 2009-10 she has run REACH Dorset, a project jointly funded by the Arts Council and Dorset Primary Care Trust, to take writing and art into mental health care.

Her books include a collection of stories, The Eye of the Buddha, and several works of non-fiction. Fantasy: The Literature of Subversion is a classic study of fantastic writing from Gothic fiction onwards and is still widely used as an undergraduate text. Frieda Lawrence is a reappraisal of the life of D.H.Lawrence’s wife, while Mothers Who Leave is a sensitive, ground-breaking account of women living without their children.

Rosie now lives in Frome, Somerset, where she is part of the town's vibrant artistic community. As well as writing, Rosie works with art, ceramics and photography. As part of her active spiritual life, she has completed a Sufi healing training in California, and spends time most years in India.
